Detached chain stitch
In the south west European country of Portugal, one of the prominent features have been their wonderful embroidery works and its fame has lured people from different parts of the world to admire these patterns of stitching and design. Among the various embroidery patterns practiced by the Portuguese, chain stitch is one of the commonest and it has numerous variants like the detached chain stitch.
In order to understand the intricacies of the detached chain stitch it is necessary for one to have an idea about the chain stitch itself which is considered to be one of the oldest of the various embroidery patterns. In fact the chain stitch which is evidenced to have originated in the Indian subcontinent and Persia spread slowly in the western world and presently a wide plethora of embroidery techniques have originated from the chain stitch itself and in the western countries chain stitch is also referred to by other names like point de chainette or tambour stitch. Chain stitch is one of the simplest stitching patterns and at times it is curved in the form of a circle to produce a motif designed like a flower and this is known as lazy daisy stitch. The lazy daisy stitch is another name by which the detached chain stitch is often referred to as apart from other names like loop stitch, picot stitch, daisy stitch, knotted knot stitch etc. The detached chain stitch is commonly used in case of stitching flower and leaf motifs and at times they are also implemented in the creation of complicated designs by the formation of loops. It has also been argued by experts that this embroidery pattern is also useful in functioning as isolated stitch which means a singular separate chain stitch which is why it has been named detached chain stitch.
