Barred chain stitch

Embroideries are a common means used in order to adorn or embellish the clothing or garments. Portugal is one of those nations which have been famous because of the beautiful and attractive embroidery patterns practiced by the embroiders and their splendor have attracted many.

One of the oldest embroidery patterns that originated in times of antiquity is the chain stitch and it is one of the simplest embroidery patterns and a huge plethora of stitches have been developed form this pattern. Barred chain stitch is therefore a kind of chain stitch only and it is to be noted that in order to try out barred chain stitch one must have a thorough knowledge of chain stitch and twisted chain stitch. Chain stitch involves a simpler stitching pattern and so does the barred chain stitch. This is because it involves the embroidery patterns of both the chain stitch and the twisted chain stitch and though the embroidery often appears to be a complex one due to the differing width of the line patterns, texture of the thread and its weight, sizes of the chain and the spacing of the spines, it can actually be worked out easily. Moreover, the barred chain stitch can be used on a variety of fabrics and different kinds of threads like silk and ribbon can be used for this embroidery. However, it is necessary to remember that the weight of the thread and its spacing at the time of stitching will determine the size of the stitch. The barred chain stitch creates a thorny line following a curve and in fact it is said that this kind of embroidery is very effective in case of producing curved as well as straight lines.  Various other embroidery patterns like French knots, buttonhole bars, bullion knots and colonial knots are often used in combination with this barred chain stitch.
